May 17 Stewardship Intern

Department: Facilities & Natural Resources Management
Reports to: Facilities Director

The Stewardship Intern will assist with ongoing maintenance of the Nature Center’s twenty acres of various habitats. The intern will work closely with the Natural Resources Management Specialist and the Facilities Director. The habitats which include riparian flood plain, marsh, upland forest and demonstration prairie are managed under the guidelines of the Nature Center’s Natural Resources Management Plan. Included in this plan to maintain biodiversity are guidelines for invasive plant control and reintroduction of native species. The intern will assist in the implementation of this plan. All aspects of the parkland including trails, boardwalks, deer exclosures , signage and intentional landscape features such as butterfly garden, rain garden, native plant garden are included.

The Stewardship Intern will work closely with volunteers. Working with the Natural Resources Management Specialist, the intern will lead groups or individual volunteers on work projects. The intern will be a resource for plant identification and proper field techniques. In addition, the intern will be responsible for managing the Stewardship Center building and the maintenance of tools and equipment.

The Stewardship Intern will assist with public workshops that address sustainability topics including rain barrels, composting, native landscaping and gardening.

Requirements:
• Educational background in biology, environmental science or related field
• Some work or volunteer experience in habitat management
• Coursework, knowledge, or interest in learning sustainability topics
• Coursework, knowledge, or interest in learning local flora and fauna
Dates of Employment:
The position will begin in the spring of 2010 and continue through the field season (approximately the end of August), depending on availability.

Stipend:
The stipend for the position is $1000.00, lots of great experience, a fun place to work, and a one-year membership with the Nature Center.
